Château Lestrille-Capmartin - Entre-deux-Mers and Bordeaux Supérieur
Saint-Germain-de-Puch, Gironde This 96-hectare estate, which has been in the Roumage family since the end of the 19th century, is now owned and run by Estelle Roumage following the retirement of her father, agricultural engineer Jean-Louis Roumage. The estate sits on the northern point of Entre-deux-Mers in the tiny town of Saint-Germain-du-Puch (a half hour south of Saint Emilion). The family--who all help out in the operation--farm using lutte raisonée, strongly believing that a healthy respect for the environment is not only crucial for long-term vineyard health but also produces the best wines.
Estelle makes all the wines employing this same philosophy (with the occasional assistance of the renowned Michel Rolland), with a light touch, preferring to stay mainly out of the way and let the healthy grapes do their work.
Winemaker Jean-Louis Roumage
The Château Lestrille is made with 60% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 15% Cabernet Franc. After a long, temperature-controlled maceration, the wine is fermented and raised in tank for a year before being released.
The Cuvée Prestige is made with 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon and sees all new oak
Chateau Lestrille Entre-deux-Mers This area of Bordeaux, south of St. Emilion and Pomerol and north of Sauternes, is known for producing light, crisp wines that pair perfectly with oysters, light fish or on simply by the glass. Estelle Roumage's version is made with 70% Sauvignon Blanc, 10% Semillon, 10% Sauvignon Gris and 10% Muscadelle. This dry white is replete with notes of grapefruit and savory herbs, and makes for an uncomplicated yet tasty glass of wine.
Château Lestrille Grand Vin de Bordeaux Despite the “Grand Vin” on the label this is actually the domaine’s entry level red, made from 100% Merlot and aged only in tank/cement. A delightful wine, it shows ripe yet bright red fruits, full body with a velvety texture and a pleasant acidity unmarred by any oak aging. Yet another great value from Lestrille.
Chateau Lestrille Capmartin Bordeaux Superieur "Tradition" The Tradition comes from a single vineyard and is aged in 2nd, 3rd and 4th use oak. It is made with 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon. This wine shows ripe fruit, extremely well-integrated oak and silky tannin that continues to keep this brilliant effort lively. This is just a delicious mouthful of wine. Damn, can we get some grilled onions and sautéed garlic with that red meat?!
