Trying to find the town of Boyeux Saint-Jerome is difficult. Trying to find one of the hamlets surrounding the town is even more difficult, especially when you try to do it at night while climbing narrow, snow-lined routes with no street lights.

Edmund Jacquin et Fils

The appellation Vin de Savoie is diverse. Spread over nearly twenty communes that each specialize in eclectic grapes, it can be challenging to approach. It can also be challenging to drive from village to village, as small mountain roads, tunnels and lakes have to be circumnavigated and traversed to reach the most important villages.

Le Cellier du Palais Apremont

Apremont lies on the other side of the valley facing Chignin, tucked within the foothills of Mount Granier. As one looks at the looming stone mass above its vineyards, a crescent-shaped curve distinguishes the line of the rock, as if a piece had been taken away. In fact, during the night of November 24, 1248, this part of Mount Granier collapsed, and the ensuing landslide buried the village St. Andr's, steamrolling everything in its path for several miles before stopping on the outskirts of Myans.

Domaine Jean-Pierre et Jean-François Quénard ChigninDomaine Jean-Pierre et Jean-François Quénard Chignin

Savoie lies in the foothills of the Alps, mostly between Lake Geneva and Chambéry. From Lyon to Chambéry, it is about an hour and a half drive on the autoroute. Savoie was annexed to the French from Torino in Northern Italy in 1860, and some of the architecture still retains an Italian feel.

Domaine Charles Trosset

The Trosset brothers, Louis and Joseph, are in their late fifties and took over for their father Charles following his death in 2000. With at least four generations of winegrowers before them, the brothers have some wonderfully-positioned vineyard plots on the steep slopes above the domaine. The siblings have clearly divided roles at the domaine: Joseph works the vines; in fact, when asked about the winemaking, he said he would have to speak to his brother.

Château de Ripaille Vin de SavoieChâteau de Ripaille Vin de Savoie

Our Savoie infatuation continues with this crisp, delicate white from the Northeastern part of the Vin de Savoie appellation. The cru Ripaille lies just outside Thonon-les-Bains, a mere 4 kilometres from Evian-les-Bains where the famous water is bottled. Both towns lie along Lac Léman (Lake Geneva, if you like), about a 75-minute drive from Geneva, Switzerland.
